Well… it’s been about a month now since the time change and I guess you could say we are sort of getting used to it getting dark at 5:00pm. However, does anyone every really get used to it? As always, we want to do all we can to help you out. So, here are some tips to fighting the darkness and the weariness that daylight savings time oftentimes brings:
- Let yourself sleep! If you haven’t already, don’t fight feeling sleepy. If you can, take a short nap several hours before your regular bedtime, so you aren’t overly tired when your regular bedtime is. You don’t have to make it a habit every night, but it’s always best to listen to your body instead of fight it. If you’re tired, sleep!
- Stick with your gym routine! If you’re used to going to the gym after work, and it’s been really hard to stick to that routine ever since the sun goes down so early now, work really hard to fight off the urge to quit. Find a friend or family member and make sure they hold you accountable. Whether it means they go with you to the gym, or you have a weekly or daily checking with them… if someone is holding you accountable on the other end, it’s much easier to stick to your plans. Also- continuing to exercise will give you that boost of energy that you’re missing each evening from a couple more hours of daylight. The endorphin rush might help you do some laundry or chores at home in the evenings.
- Continue to eat a healthy diet. Diet is key when it comes to energy. It is very typical to feel sluggish and lethargic when it gets dark so early and it feels like there’s nothing to do during sundown. However, eating a well-balance diet throughout the day will allow you to still have the energy you need to keep going in the evenings.
- Give yourself some time to look forward to in the evenings. It doesn’t have to be a planned event each night but look forward to something in the evenings. Maybe it means turning in at 7:30 on Wednesdays and making it a movie night. Give yourself something to look forward to, and turn the dark, drab nights into something fun that you look forward to each week. Winter can be just as fun as summer – we promise!
- The time changes also means – the holidays! We get it, it’s difficult to feel productive when the sun clocks out at 5p each night. However, one thing that always makes us happy us knowing that daylights savings time also means it’s the most wonderful time of the year! The holidays are here, and it’s time to be surround by friends and family. In addition to the holidays, the idea of hot chocolate, movies, and football season also excites many!
See?! Just because it gets dark so early now doesn’t mean that we have to shut down and go to sleep at 6pm each night. Give yourself something to look forward to and find a friend to hold you accountable. You can do this chick! Make winter a great season!
