Here it comes again, ladies. The heart shaped boxes start filling the aisles at your favorite grocery store, the jewelry ads are popping up everywhere, and you’re preparing yourself for all of the overly annoying posts on social media about the flowers sent to your friends by the “Most. Amazing. Guy… EVER!!!” **insert eye roll here**
We hear ya. We’ve all been there at some point. Fairy tales aren’t real, after all. So, we put together a list of ways to bring some positivity into your life this Valentine’s Day.
Buy your own flowers.Yep, I said it. If you enjoy beautiful things like a gorgeous arrangement of tulips that bloom right in front of your eyesor the aroma of fresh, vibrant roses filling the air, BUY THEM. Place them in your favorite spot in your home or office and allow yourself to enjoy something beautiful. You don’t need a guy to have nice things.
Remember– it’s only a day. Well, for most people. We do know some that carry on the entire week, but for the most part it’s over and done in 24 hours. I often tell friends going through hard times, “It isn’t your forever.” Meaning, it’s not a permanent situation. So, just continue with your normal daily activities, like working out, running errands, etc. and it will be over and done with before you know it. The worst thing you can do is change your routine, to sit around and do nothing but memorialize a day that you despise. You deserve so much better than that.
Give joy to someone else’s day. The best distraction to your own heavy heart is to fill someone else’s! Do you know someone else who’s lonely? Maybe it’s an elderly neighbor who is a widow or a friend from work who recently lost someone they love. Be careful to not be so blinded by your own situation that you don’t see others hurting. Connect with them by buying some extra flowers when you pick up your own or asking them to join you for dinner. You might find a great friend in the process that you’ll want to keep around past Valentine’s Day.
Change your perspective.Don’t let society tell YOU what YOUR Valentine’s Day has to look like. Love doesn’t have to be just for couples in a relationship. Love is about caring for others, but it’s also about caring for yourself. Love yourself and celebrate YOU! So, buy those flowers, remind yourself it’s not your forever, and see if you can spread a little joy to those around you. You may just have “The. Best Valentine’s. Day… EVER!!!” 😉
